Affectionately called the ‘Venice of the East’, Alleppey is at the heart of a wide network of island canals, large expanse of backwaters with green paddy fields on either side and isolated islands with a rich haul of rare species of birds in its sanctuaries. Alleppey is the venue of the world renowned Nehru Trophy Boat race, as well as the equally famous Pulinkunnu Boat race and Payipad Jalolsavam. It is also the centre of coir industry and undoubtedly the most preferred ‘must see’ destination in Kerala.
