Coconut Lagoon is reachable only by water down a river frequently laden with water hyacinths. It is beautifully hidden along one shore of Vembanad Lake, a 175 sq km expanse stretching between the backwaters of Kerala and the sea. You reach the resort in peace and quiet and that is the way it stays until you leave.
The reception area dates back to 1860, the four-cornered open courtyard design an echo from the past. The entire mansion was painstakingly transplanted from the nearby village of Vaikom in 1993.
The resort has three kinds of accommodation, all with their own distinctive interiors with fine views over the lake. Wrapped around all these old-world touches are the creature comforts of air-conditioning, telephones and hot/cold water but no TV which does not belong here.
There is plenty to do at Coconut Lagoon. Take a canoe out into the backwaters and explore this fascinating world or go fishing with simple bamboo poles. If you are more environmentally inclined take a visit to Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary just across the Kavanar River. Or just enjoy Coconut Lagoon's wonderful grounds which are home to a profusion of trees, including ayurvedic and medicinal plants.
If you are looking for peace, tranquility, good food and a truly memorable experience Coconut Lagoon has to be on your shortlist. It is on the expensive side but the cost is justified.
