ERNAKULAM DISTRICT

Ernakulam is located on the coast of the Arabian Sea with Kottayam and Alappuzha districts in the south, Idukki in the east and Thrissur in the north. The commercial capital and the most cosmopolitan city in Kerala, Kochi, in Ernakulam, is also known as the Queen of the Arabian Sea. With one of the finest natural harbours in the world, this was once a major city for commerce and trade with the British, Arabs. Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch etc.

PLACES OF INTEREST
Bolgatty Island
Bolgatty is a beautiful island. The Bolgatty Palace which was built in 1744 is situated here and is now a hotel.

Chinese Fishing Nets
At the entrance of the Harbour, fishing nets are a fascinating site and can be seen along the backwaters. This form of fishing is believed to have been brought by the Chinese.

Kochi Shipyard
This is the biggest ship-building yard in India. Built in collaboration with the Japanese it has a building dock and a repair dock

IDDUKKI DISTRICT

A landlocked district, Idukki is one of the most nature rich areas in Kerala. High ranges and wooded valleys are girded by three main rivers – Periyar, Thalayar and Thodupuzhayar – are their tributaries. The River Pamba also has its origin here. As a tourist destination, Idukki offers divers attractions like wildlife sanctuaries, hill stations, spice plantation tours, mountain treks, elephant rides etc. Idukki has a large poulation of tribals, the main tribes being Muthuvan, Malayarayan, Mannan, Paliyan, Urali, Ulladan, Malavedan and Malampandaram. The tribes of Kerala have unique customs and beliefs and maintain an ethos which is distinctly different from that of mainstream culture.

KOTTAYAM DISTRICT

Bordered by the lofty Western Ghats in the East and the Vembanad Lake and paddy fields of Kuttanad in the west, Kottayam is a land of unique characteristics. Panoramic backwater stretches, lush paddy fields, highlands, extensive rubber plantations and totally literate people have given this district the enviable title: ‘The land of letters, latex and lakes’. This land also boasts of the first Malayalam printing press which was established by Benjamin Bailey, a Christian missionary, in 1820 AD.

Kottayam is the ideal take off point for visitis to Peermede, Munnar, Idukki, Thekkady, Ernakulam and the temple city of Madurai.

ALAPPHUZA DISTRICT

With the Arabian Sea in the west and a vast network of lakes, lagoons and freshwater rivers criss-crossing it, Alappuzha is a district of inmense natural beauty. Referred to as the Venice of the East by travellers from across the world, this backwater country is also home to diverse animal and birdlife. By virtue of its proximity to the sea, the town has always enjoyed a unique place in the maritime history of Kerala. Today, Alappuzha is an important backwater destination attracting several thousand foreign tourists every year. Alappuzha is also famous for its boat races, beaches, marine products and coir industry. A singularity of this land is the region called Kuttanad – a land of lush paddy fields referred to as the Rice Bowl of Kerala and one of the few places in the world where farming is done below sea level.

PATHANAMTHITTA DISTRICT

Pathanamthitta , a hilly terrain of pristine beauty is popular as the headquarters of pilgrim worship in Kerala. More than 50% of the total area of this land of temples, rivers, mountain ranges, and coconut groves is covered by forests. The district is frequented by visitors from India and abroad often for its water fiestas, religious shrines and the cultural training centre. Pathanamthitta is bordered by the Western Ghats in the east, Kollam district in the south, Alappuzha district in the west and the Kottayan and Idukki districts in the north.

KOLLAM DISTRICT

Kollam is an important commercial centre of the state and famous for the country's cashew trading and processing industry.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM DISTRICT

Located at the southwestern tip of India, Thiruvananthapuram district is bounded by the Arabian Sea in the west and the Tamil Nadu in the east. The wooded highlands in the Western Ghats in the eastern and northeastern borders give Thiruvananthapuram some of the most enchanting picnic spots. A long shoreline with international renowned beaches, historic monumnets, backwater stretches and a rich cultural heritage make this district a much sought after tourist destination. Thiruvananthapuram is the capital of Kerala.
